As the US continues to power the global economy, its law firms are thriving not just stateside but in key international hubs.

With client-books full of US investment banks and private equity firms, which have been raising huge sums lately for a flurry of mega deals, business is booming and money is being invested in expansion. A pound weakened by Brexit uncertainty makes London a strategic priority for elite players like Shearman & Sterling.

On Wednesday 16 January Legal Cheek is partnering with the elite global law firm giant for an evening of commercial awareness discussion and careers advice.

The session will feature a Question Time-style panel discussion with Shearman & Sterling lawyers: including antitrust partner James Webber, European finance partner Korey Fevzi, and capital markets partners Marwa Elborai and Jacques McChesney.

They will answer students’ questions about the battle for market share in London, and explain why they see US law firms gaining the edge in high margin deal work. They will look ahead, too, to the 2020s and consider how big picture macro economic trends will affect the global legal market.

Careers advice will also be high on the agenda, with the lawyers sharing the story of their career journeys so far with attendees, while giving an insight into what it’s like to work at Shearman & Sterling – ahead of the firm’s vacation scheme application deadline on 20 January.

The session commences with a panel discussion, chaired by a Legal Cheek journalist, after which there will be drinks, nibbles and networking with the lawyers on the panel, Shearman & Sterling trainees and members of the firm’s graduate recruitment team.

Apply to attend below. You’ll be asked to submit a CV and two questions for the panel. Please note that the details of those offered places will, subject to consent, be shared with Shearman & Sterling’s graduate recruitment team.
