As the profession gears up for the new Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE), set to replace the Legal Practice Course (LPC) from next year, aspiring lawyers are left asking, ‘What does this mean for me?’

Legal Cheek is offering a limited number of free student places for LegalEdCon North, to find out.

The day-long conference, which is hosted at The Lowry, Media City, Manchester on Thursday 30 January, will bring together leading figures from northern-headquartered national firms, global law firms’ northshoring offices and medium-sized and smaller practices, alongside legal academics from universities and law schools across the North of England and beyond.

Topping the speaker roster are SQE co-creators Julie Brannan and Crispin Passmore, who will share their vision for new ways in delivering graduate courses, while exploring the wider opportunities under the new ‘super exam’ to change legal education and training for the better.

The duo will be joined by Freshfields’ chief innovation officer, Isabel Parker, Herbert Smith Freehills’ head of e-Discovery, Stephanie Barrett, and a host of forward-thinking minds from innovative law firms, in-house legal teams, academia and legal tech companies. These experts will examine SQE-led opportunities to embed tech-training into legal education, in preparation for the new skills needed by lawyers in an increasingly tech-savvy sector.

The conference will also feature additional sessions on mental health and diversity, during which speakers will discuss the problems facing the profession and how to bring about real change. In-between sessions there will be the opportunity to network over breakfast, lunch and post-Conference drinks.

LegalEdCon North’s gold sponsors are BARBRI, BPP University, The College of Legal Practice, Manchester Metropolitan University and The University of Law. The silver sponsors are Nottingham Law School, Leicester De Montfort Law School, LexisNexis, LawCare and STEM Future Lawyers. LegalEdCon North is held in association with Manchester Law Society.
